Introduction to Pelletizing

Pelletizing means converting the Iron ore fines into uniform "Sized Iron Ore Pellets", that can be directly charged in the "blast furnace". It can also be used as an ideal replacement of the sized iron ore in "Sponge Iron" industry. It has excellent export potentials.
 

The pellets have great advantages over "Sized iron ore".

Advantages of Pellets over Sized Iron Ore:

  • Standardization - Uniform size range, generally within a range of 9-16 mm.
  • Purity - 63% to 68 % iron, mainly Fe2 O3.
  • Cost-effectiveness - Virtually no loss on ignition while a high and uniform porosity of 25%-30 % allows fast reduction and high metallization rates.
  • Strength - High and uniform mechanical strength even under thermal stress in reducing atmospheres.
  • Transportable - Low degradation under abrasive influences.
  • Increase the production of Sponge Iron by 25% to 30% with same amount of fuel.
  • Equipped with advanced environmental technology, they are almost Pollution-free, generating no solid or liquid residues.

Whereas the "Sized Iron Ores" are subject to the high price fluctuation, the cost of "iron ore fine" remains low and reasonably fixed. With the conversion cost remaining fixed, sponge iron made out of pellets is more economical. An effective control over the production cost, thus, saves us form heavy price fluctuation of "sized iron ore".
The Palletizing plants is highly profitable proposition for mines owners as they need not dispose off these fines at throw away price & can convert these in pellets. They can get at least 25% to 30% higher price from the pellets than sized iron ore.
