What is Pelletization?

The process of Pelletization helps converting Iron Ore Fines into “Uniform Size Iron Ore Pallets” that can be fed in the blast furnaces or in the DRI kiln (DRI).

 

Why Pelletization?

Pelletization is only answer to a major question of preserving our precious iron ore and using it wisely.

The natural resource Iron ore has become the focus point. Once understood that its availability is not infinite, numbers of major steel companies in the world are eyeing Indian Iron Ore Mines. On one hand the domestic demand of steel is increasing day by day and on the other hand limited resources are left which made Iron Ore as precious Ore.

This mad rush for export of Iron Ore should be kept under control as we have an example of Minnesota Mines of USA which were once one of the biggest mines of Hematite Iron Ore. But mad rush has totally exhausted it and to the extent they even broke the Taconite Stones to extract only 20% Magnetite from them.

It is also a serious threat from China of dumping steel in India made from Iron Ore Fines exported from us. China is simply earning profits by value addition. This is exactly what British did to Indian Cotton Industry in per-independence period but at that time we had Mahatma Gandhiji who understood the importance of value addition and start the revolution of Khadi Gram Udyog, but naturally we miss him today for Iron Ore value addition.

Presently, Indian Iron Ore fines do not have domestic market as fines cannot be directly used in blast furnace or DRI for making steel. Hence we are forced to export this precious ore at throw away price. We can use these fines by Pelletization them as pellets can be easily used in blast furnace or DRI for making steel.

Pellets & their advantages

Pellets are uniformed sized, with purity of 65%- 68% contributing to faster reduction and high metallization rates.

Pellets with their high, uniform mechanical strength and high abrasive strength increase production of sponge iron by 25% to 30% with same amount of fuel.

Standardization - Uniform size range, generally within a range of 9-16 mm.
Purity - 65% to 68 % iron, mainly (Fe2O3).
Cost-effectiveness - Virtually no loss on ignition while a high and uniform porosity of 25%-30 % allows fast reduction and high metallization rates.
Strength - High and uniform mechanical strength even under thermal stress in reducing atmospheres.
Transportable - Low degradation under abrasive influences.

Equipped with advanced environmental technology, they are almost Pollution-free.

The Pelletizing plants is highly profitable proposition for India as we need not dispose off these fines at throw away price & can convert these in pellets and can get good premium by selling this value added product.
